in grant funding secured for various projects

In the same way that fortune favors the bold, planning favors those who aren’t afraid to take risks–those that champion progress. Throughout the last few months working for the City of Chicopee, I came to find this out as the planning department is responsible for a variety of initiatives both planning and non-planning related. From the development of RFPs and RFQs, to managing the City's largest cultural event, planting trees in neighborhoods deprived of vegetation, designing advertisements and marketing materials for various ongoing initiatives, Chicopee's planning department spearheads a multitude of diverse projects aimed at bettering the quality of life for those that live, work and play there.

Coming from a design background, Chicopee's progressiveness just makes sense. Despite the unorthodox nature of the department, I believe that now more than ever, planners must not only be adaptable, but open to taking risks and pushing forth important initiatives when no one else will. With technology advancing at such a rapid rate and the needs of the population shifting in response, planning methods that have traditionally worked in the past may not necessarily work in the future. And if that's the case, it would be a disservice not only to everyone, but ourselves if we as planners, aren’t willing to change too.
